I like to think that even if Gumball is so scenically pink, Marshall is the most caring about their relationship, so that he start to like Gumball way before Gumball even thought of liking him back.
...and obviously that imply a long period where the teasing from Marshall became more awkward, and the line of personal space is completly torn apart.
